Because some countries are not as developed as others, certain diseases are easier to catch while traveling. Often times you need to show documentation that you have received these vaccinations. The vaccines that you need all depend on exactly where you will be traveling in the country. If you are going to be in a more rural area, then you might need more vaccines than if you will be in the city.
Recommended Vaccinations for Brazil
Brazil is a country that requires certain vaccines for traveling there. Before traveling, it is best that you be up-to-date on all vaccines that are required in your own country. It is recommended that you have your yearly flu shot as well.
It is also advised that all travelers, regardless of where they will be in the country receive the Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccines. The Hepatitis A vaccine is important to get because it is found in contaminated food and water. It could be found anywhere in the country. The Typhoid disease can also be found in contaminated food and water. If you will be staying with any friends or relatives, then you should get the vaccine. Whether staying in the city or rural areas, it is also recommended to have the typhoid vaccine. You will thank yourself for being prepared.
There are some vaccines that are recommended to get, but are not necessary. These vaccines include:
- Hepatitis B
- Malaria
- Rabies
- Yellow Fever
Hepatitis B is contacted through sexual contact, needles, and blood. It is only really necessary to get this vaccine if you believe you are at high risk for contact with bodily fluids.
Malaria is obtained from mosquito bites. If you know that you will be spending a lot of time outdoors where mosquitoes and other insects are prevalent, then the malaria vaccine will be necessary as well.
Rabies is not a huge threat to most travelers. Since rabies is found in animals, you will only want the vaccine if you know you will be around and working with a lot of animals. Otherwise, you can skip this vaccine.
Yellow fever is not recommended for all areas of Brazil, but it is recommended for a large part of the country. Anyone greater than 9 months old should receive the vaccine. Yellow fever is also transmitted by mosquitoes and is more common near areas with a lot of water. To know whether you should get the vaccine or not, talk with your doctor. They will be able to give a recommendation.
