The Perfect Packing List for Backpack Travel

We've covered how to pack a backpack, but tied in with that is the question of what to take. Of course, the question of what to wear will be dictated in part by where you're going. You may need to bring heavier rain gear or more heavy-duty supplies for weathering the cold, depending on whether you're going to Southeast Asia or Northern Europe.

If you're traveling through Europe and want to see old churches, or the Vatican, you're going to need at least one fairly modest outfit if you want to get in the door. But this isn't a time when you wanted to be overloaded and ready for anything that could ever, possibly happen. Smart planning will put you in the best position between "traveling light" and "being prepared," and smart packing will help you pull it off.

  • A handful of short and long-sleeved shirts
  • Two pairs of pants
  • A pair of comfortable, climate-appropriate walking shoes (wear these, don't pack them)
  • Socks and underwear
  • Light towel
  • Destination-appropriate goods
  • Cold-weather clothing
  • Mosquito protection
  • Poncho
  • Swimwear
  • Roll your clothing! (this isn't an item, but it's very important for effective packing)
