Passing the Time on Long Layovers

Traveling by airplane can sometimes be a hassle. Long layovers are oftentimes unavoidable and can prolong travel time by multiple hours. Fortunately, there are several things that you can do to pass time during a long layover. Below are some tips to help a lengthy layover fly by :

Dining

The vast majority of airports have food chains inside of the terminals. Most of the restaurants inside of airports are fast food chains, but an increasing number of airports are home to fine dining and more traditional sit-down restaurants. If you will be traveling all day, then you will definitely want to eat while you are waiting for the next flight. While some flights serve food, others only offer drinks. If there is a full restaurant available and you have a lot of time to kill, then you may want to consider stopping to eat. You will be able to enjoy your meal, which is sure to offer better food and more space than any offerings on the plane.

Work Out

As strange as it may sound, you can get a little bit of exercise while you are waiting for your next flight. In fact, some airports have a gym inside of them. You may want to do some research ahead of time in order to find out whether the airports have gyms and if they are available to passengers without frequent flyer status. It is also a good idea to check to see if the airports have shower facilities.

You can still workout if the airport does not have a gym. For example, you can pack some comfortable shoes and take a walk or light jog around the airport. You can also do some stretches in dedicated relaxation or yoga rooms that are becoming increasingly common throughout airports.

Read

If you love to read, then you may want to pass the time by reading a magazine or book. You may be able to find a magazine stand or bookstore in the airport, but it is best to bring your own books. If you will be bringing a Nook, Kindle, or other eBook device, then you should make sure that you bring your charger or seek out charging stations near coffee shops or lounge areas.

Listen To Some Music

Listening to some of your favorite tunes can help you pass the time while you are waiting for your next flight. Be sure to wear headphones, though, if you plan on listening to music so that you don't disturb those around you.

People Watch

There are a lot of interesting people at airports. That is why people-watching is an activity that many enjoy. Come up with stories about where others are headed or where they've arrived from. You could also make it into a bingo game: someone wearing a tracksuit, a guy in a cowboy hat, a businessman reading the Wall Street Journal, etc.

Long layovers can be tedious, but if you plan ahead or use your imagination, your flight will be leaving before you know it.
