Visiting San Diego on a Budget

Sunny San Diego offers many activities for vacationers and is also home to budget-friendly opportunities that cost very little or are even free. Lodging, food, and entertainment all have inexpensive options. There are also some simple ways to pay less for certain activities and hotels.

If you're on a shoestring budget, consider the following activities and options for getting the most out your vacation dollar.

A Day at the Beach

One of the most magnificent features of San Diego is its coastline. Travel gurus have lavished attention and praise upon the southern California coast. San Diego beaches are an attraction that is open all year long and are virtually free except for an occasional fee to park.

The Pacific Ocean can get chilly in the winter and sit below 60 degrees during the day; however, every day is a good day to visit the beach, even if you can't go in the water. Pack a lunch for a picnic and avoid the cost of eating out while sitting on a magnificent stretch of Pacific beach.

A Padres Game in the "Park"

A ticket in the "nosebleed" section of Petco Park costs less than $30, but you can see a game for even less money by sitting in the Park at the Park. This giant field that sits right outside of the ball field costs just five dollars, and it's a perfect spot to picnic and enjoy a baseball game.

The stadium is newly built and sitting on the grass outside the area of play offers a perfect date for a couple or a fun afternoon for family. The stadium's picturesque downtown location makes it a perfect part of an afternoon spent in the company of shiny, modern high rises.

A Beautiful Sunset at Sunset Cliffs

One of the most remarkable parts of living in California near the coast is the nightly goodbye from the sun. Witnessing a California sunset from Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is a magical experience.

Couples visiting San Diego will want to spend twilight at the park. Parking is even free in lots that line the coast and along the road that borders the cliffs. The park is also an inexpensive and gorgeous place for a destination wedding.

Other Frugal Travel Tips

  • Visit in the off-season: California is beautiful all year long, but it's easy to get cheap accommodations from January to March and in November.
  • Stay in a small hotel: Taxes aren't as steep for hotels with fewer than 70 rooms. You'll pay just 2% at small hotels versus 10.5% at large establishments.
  • Get the Go San Diego card: This card makes the holder eligible for giant discounts on popular attractions like SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo, and LEGOLAND California.

Like any major city, San Diego offers plenty of free and low-cost attractions, but there are also ways to reduce costs of major attractions and events. Choose your arrival date carefully and take advantage of off-season prices and coupons. Start planning your San Diego vacation early so you can get the best price on everything.
