The Worst Football Towns in the U.S.

Charlotte, North Carolina

Charlotte, North Carolina

Charlotte is an amazing city to live in, but it’s not if you’re a football fan. The Panthers made it to the top 5 worst teams in 2022, and will probably be there for a while. But that’s not all, Charlotte’s college team is just as bad.

Besides their dismal football teams, Charlotte is a pretty great place to live. If you get tired of watching their losing football teams, take a tour of the NASCAR hall of fame.

St. George, Utah

St. George, Utah

Ranking towards the bottom of the pack, St. George varsity football made the top 5 worst college teams in 2022. This is a major disappointment to fans in the community. At that point, you’re just going to a game for the novelty of it.

No one wants to show up for a losing team…so, this makes St. George a pretty awful town for a devoted football fan. There are way better teams out there if you’re a fan of college football. You could still go to a game, but be prepared to be let down again, again, and again.

Ypsilanti, Michigan

Ypsilanti, Michigan

Ypsilanti, Michigan, home of Eastern Michigan University, has been around since 1849. Upon its establishment, nobody cared about football then and they still don't now. They have an awful football program.

The Eastern Michigan Eagles are not well-recognized there and performance has only slightly improved. Overall, the town is like the Jan Brady of football.  It's sad, really.

Buffalo, New York

Buffalo, New York

Sure, unlike NYU, the State University of New York at Buffalo has a football team. And that team is called the Bulls. And no, not like the Chicago Bulls – because that's a basketball team.

In Buffalo, New York, the Bulls are not so hot, even though it's their home team. And if they are not excited, there's really nobody else that would be. But hey, they have the lowest average ticket price for an NFL game in the country – that's something at least.

Tucson, Arizona

Tucson, Arizona

Ranked near the bottom of the pack, Tucson, Arizona is one of the least desirable places to live if you’re a football fan. Not only would you be rooting for a losing college team, but you would have to be a fan of the Wildcats. You would think they would be a bit more original.

Nothing brings a town together like a good college football team. That’s just not the case in Tucson. Fans are continually let down…they barely even show up anymore! If you’re a football fanatic, we suggest moving somewhere else.

Kalamazoo, Michigan

Kalamazoo, Michigan

Living in Kamalazoo is not an easy thing for a football fan. The biggest reason: there's not a football stadium in sight. You have to drive an hour out of your way to get to see the next big game.

Additionally, college football is not of interest to the population. Western Michigan University, located in Kamalazoo, draws in less than 15,000 people for every game.

Jackson, Mississippi

Jackson, Mississippi

If you are looking for a new town to settle in, Jackson is also sure to disappoint you. The city has some of the least-engaged college football fans in the U.S.

The Jackson State Tigers are sure not doing their part in getting people excited about football either. Since 1911, their all-time record is 477–331–22, which is certainly nothing to be proud of.

Valparaiso, Indiana

Valparaiso, Indiana

The Valparaiso Beacons are just about the worst football team out there, you would think Indiana would have a better team, but these teams are a complete snooze fest to watch. We’re not quite sure why anyone would want to live in Indiana anyways, but you might want to consider moving if you're a football fan.

In both pro football and college football, Valparaiso teams just fail to stack up against the competition. Consistently at the bottom of the pack, these teams are only delivering one thing to fans…disappointment.

South Blend, Indiana

South Blend, Indiana

Tied with Colombus, Ohio, South Blend has the highest minimum college football season tickets in the country, making football just too expensive to enjoy. South Blend makes it all about the money and not a love for the game.

It's not even as if colleges don't get enough money that the money is going to a good cause or something. South blend is ranked #17 among midsize cities in Wallet Hub's list of the "Best and Worst Cities for Football Fans."

Albuquerque, New Mexico

Albuquerque, New Mexico

Albuquerque, New Mexico may have Heisenberg but they sure don't have a football team of notability. The town has one of the worst college football teams in the country: the Lobos, which in some years, win little if any games.

The university has approximately 35,000 students in a city with a half million people, but the stadium only holds 40,000 people. And even then, the stadium is not packed. In fact, you can expect only half of those seats to be filled on a Saturday.

West Lafayette, Indiana

West Lafayette, Indiana

West Layfayette is the home of Purdue University in Indiana. The small town is comprised of just 30,000 and the students at Purdue only care about one thing: their education, of course.

When you come to West Lafayette, you can expect to see plenty of empty seats, so there's no one to have a beer with. So, not only is there nothing to do in such a small town but there's virtually no football to pass the time either. Yeesh.

Detroit, Michigan

Detroit, Michigan

When it comes to football, Detroit just doesn’t have it in the bag. Let’s just say the Lions aren’t the pride of Michigan. The only impressive ranking the Lions made it to in 2022 is making it to the top 5 worst pro teams.

If you live in Detroit, you may consider switching your sport of choice to hockey. The Red Wings put on a much better game than the Lion’s ever thought about playing. You get the thrill of grown men beating the snot out of each other, but also the thrill of actually winning every once in a while!

East Hartford, Connecticut

East Hartford, Connecticut

When it comes to performance, the college team of East Hartford is a huge disappointment, every time. The city hosts one of the worst college teams in the country.

The UConn Huskies represent the University of Connecticut. Having been playing since 1896, it’s a shock how they haven't gotten any better at playing football. The team has competed in six different bowl games, but none of them were the Superbowl. But hey, at least they won the PapaJohns.com Bowl in 2009!

Boston, Massachusetts

Boston, Massachusetts

There is no doubt that Beantown has one of the best performing NFL teams in the country: the New England Patriots. The team has won the Superbowl six times and has competed 11 times. And each time, fans cheer on the team from all over the country.

Of course, their success comes at a price. According to Wallethub, the city charges fans among the highest NFL ticket prices. And while you may have the money to spend, we don't think it's quite right for the fans.

Cincinnati, Ohio

Cincinnati, Ohio

Life as a Cincinnati Bearcats fan is rough. Unless you are used to failing, being a Bearcats fan means you are on the losing side, again and again. The University of Cincinnati's football program is so bad that they almost quit for good at one point.

On the plus side, they do have the most accessible NFL football stadiums and the lowest average ticket prices. Of course, that's probably because nobody wants to go. if they want to improve attendance, they are basically going to have to start getting better or paying people to attend.

Portland, Oregon

Portland, Oregon

Portland, Oregon doesn't have the very worst football team nor do they have the best. And while they do okay in terms of NFL performance – sort of – where they really fail is when it comes to college football.

College footballs fans are out of luck if they are looking for an accessible stadium, as they feature a limited capacity. In addition, they have limited fan engagement.

Providence, Rhode Island

Providence, Rhode Island

Providence is a town that is small enough that it really can't compete with the big cities in terms of fans but that's not really an excuse for it having one of the worst-performing college teams in the country.

Tied with East Hartford, Providence's poor performance at college games makes the city a terrible place to live if you love football. Wallethub actually ranks it as the very worst city when it comes to midsize cities.

Lousiville, Kentucky

Lousiville, Kentucky

Louisville, Kentucky has another one of the worst college teams in America. Over the years, the Louisville Cardinals football team has seen some devastating losses.

Having only won 10 times in a bowl game and tied once since 1957, Louisville's records are not great. Coach careers have been particularly short over the past few years as well. On top of this, among the biggest cities in the U.S., Louisville ranks as the worst city for football fans.

Waco, Texas

Waco, Texas

It's time for Waco to wake up; football is where it's at! Am I right? No. Fine, Waco - have it your way!

I guess you can't blame them. Baylor University in Waco has just 15,000 students in a city of just 125,000 people. They are ranked #54 on Wallethub's list of the "Best and Worst Cities for Football Fans," making them one of the worst midsize cities.

San Jose, California

San Jose, California

San Jose, California easily has the lowest number of engaged fans in the state of California. They couldn't care less about that egg-shaped ball, the uniforms, the fake grass, or any of that stuff.

So, what do you do in San Jose? Well, you can check out the Winchester House. I mean, that's kind of cool…it just doesn't have anything to do with football.

Minneapolis, Minnesota

Minneapolis, Minnesota

Minneapolis is a terrible football town for a few different reasons. For one, it gets exceptionally cold there, which means it's nearly impossible to play well when you are chattering your teeth still.  On top of that, the Minnesota Golden Gophers, as they are called, are a consistently losing team, having lost for 14 years straight in recent years.

They did manage to win in 2018, however, and several more times in 2019. They even won against No. 4 Penn State, 31-26. Maybe if they keep winning, they'll get people a lot more excited about the Gophers. But don't put too much pressure on them – it affects their game.

Miami, Florida

Miami, Florida

The Miami football program has plenty of problems. Not only are they just not winning, but they are breaking rules on the field, left and right.

Because of this, interest in football is going downhill. Attendance to their games is dropping with emptier and emptier stands every year.

(Image via Wikipedia)

Baltimore, Maryland

Baltimore, Maryland

In Baltimore, you gotta watch your back and the next football game – by yourself. Baltimore, Maryland is one of the worst football towns because they care less about the sport than anywhere else in the country.

They certainly don't give a flying you-know-what about college football, and the Baltimore Ravens NFL team has a dwindling number of fans. So far, they have been to the Superbowl once – but at least they won.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Philadelphia is the home of Temple University. But in Philadelphia, college football is no religious experience.  The home team, the Owls, play at Lincoln Financial Field.

Who else plays at Lincoln Financial Field? The Eagles. And if you could see the Eagles, why would you see the Owls? Good question. You wouldn't and you don't. With that said, even if you want to see the Eagles instead, it has one of the least accessible NFL stadiums in the country.

(Image via Wikipedia)

Chicago, Illinois

Chicago, Illinois

Chicago, Illinois has a disappointing following of NFL fans, making it generally unengaged by the sport. Da Bears may be da best thing ever for a select few, but these days, they are just the butt of an SNL joke.

To make matters worse, it seems Chicago doesn't care if anyone joins in on the fun as the city has one of the least accessible NFL stadiums in the country. They also charge some of the highest NFL ticket prices too.

(Image via Wikipedia)

Jacksonville, Florida

Jacksonville, Florida

Jacksonville, Florida is not for football fans for a wide variety of reasons. Let's start off by mentioning that they just don't care. They have the least-engaged college football "fans" and the least-engaged NFL "fans."

Add to this the fact that they have the second-least accessible stadiums and you have your answer as to why Jacksonville is on this list. The Jacksonville Jaguars are virtually unheard of outside of the city and potentially inside as well. They have never won a Superbowl.

(Image via Wikipedia)

Honolulu, Hawaii

Honolulu, Hawaii

Honolulu is the worst town in Hawaii for football. Why? Because the tropical paradise is actually hell for football fans. It's just not practical!

It's hard to get college students engaged in anything other than the beaches in Hawaii – studies, sports, or otherwise. Additionally, it's expensive to get other teams to play against as the cost of traveling there is expensive.

(Image via Wikipedia)

New York, New York

New York, New York

New York, New York is a city that takes itself way too seriously, so it's no surprise that they don't care about football. Since 1942, NYU hasn't had a football program, so to be sure, it has the least-engaged college football fans. On top of this, it has the least engaged NFL fans too.

Accessibility to stadiums, both NFL and college, is virtually non-existent. The New York Giants, the city's NFL team is one of the worst-performing NFL teams. Indeed, New York is where football comes to die.

(Image via Wikipedia)

Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles is one of the biggest cities in the country, so surely its football following must be huge? No. In general, LA doesn't give two cents about football. Whether you are talking about USC or UCLA, you would be hard-pressed to find even 100,000 people to fill your stadium.

In a city of over 15 Million, you think you would be able to find more fans, but alas, you can expect to find plenty of empty seats every Saturday. The population is just not engaged and the Stadiums are not easily accessible. Los Angeles also has the highest NFL ticket prices, despite the low demand.

(Image via Wikipedia)

Houston, Texas

Houston, Texas

Houston, Texas is one of the worst, if not the worst football town for a number of reasons. Houston has not one, but two FBS programs and neither of them are well-recognized. For all intents and purposes, football in Houston is irrelevant to the rest of the nation.

Within the city, Houston is just "meh," as it has some of the least engaged NFL fans in the country. It also has the least accessible NFL stadium, the multi-purpose: NRG Stadium. So, if you love football, you'll need to drive miles and miles and miles out of your way to find a game that matters.
