The Least Patriotic States in America

10. Mississippi

10. Mississippi

Poor Mississippi never gets any love, and that’s once again the case when it comes to the state’s level of patriotism. They round out the bottom ten of the nation with an overall score of 30.67.

However, the Hospitality State didn’t do terrible in every category related to patriotism. While they ranked number 48 for civic engagement, they did much better for military engagement, with a rank of number 15.

9. Texas

9. Texas

Everything is bigger in Texas…except for their patriotism. The Lone Star state came in at number 41 in the nation for patriotism, with a low total score of 29.96.

Texas is a land of contrasts, and you can see that in its wildly divergent military and civic engagement scores. Their civic engagement is almost the worst in the nation, with a rank of 49 out 50. However, their military engagement breaks the top ten in the nation, with a rank of number 9.

8. West Virginia

8. West Virginia

West Virginia might just be a state away from our nation’s capital, but they still ranked in the bottom ten in the country for patriotism. They’re ranked number 42 overall with a total score of 29.82.

Both civic and military engagement scores sit in the high 30s for West Virigina. However, their civic engagement is slightly worse with a ranking of number 38, while military engagement is slightly better at a ranking of 36.

7. Arkansas

7. Arkansas

Arkansas may be the Land of Opportunity, but it’s quite a different story when it comes to patriotism. They came in at number 43 with an overall score of 29.76.

When it comes to military engagement in the state, Arkansas didn’t do too bad—coming in at 29th in the nation. On the other hand, their civic engagement score was much less impressive, with the state coming in at number 43.

6. New Jersey

6. New Jersey

New Jersey is the butt of a lot of jokes, and sometimes it’s totally unfair. But not when it comes to patriotism! The much-maligned state’s overall ranking was a paltry 44. The Garden State doesn’t have much more room to fall before they hit rock bottom!

When it comes to civic engagement, they honestly don’t do too bad, with an overall ranking of 29 in the nation. However, military engagement is much worse for New Jersey, which comes in at number 48. Overall, they got a score of 29.63.

5. Illinois

5. Illinois

The midwest may seem like a very friendly place (and it is), but it’s not the most patriotic! Or that’s the case if you live in Illinois, which has an overall rank of 45 out of 50 when it comes to patriotism.

Both their military and civic engagement rankings were very close together—and neither one is anything to write home about! They ranked 39 and 36 for those categories respectively.

4. California

4. California

California is a huge state with a ton of different kinds of people, but there’s one type you won’t find there—the super patriotic! The state was ranked as the 46th most patriotic state in the Union.

When it comes to military engagement, it could be worse—California comes in at number 31 for that. However, their civic engagement ranking is much lower, with sunny CA placing number 44 in the nation.

3. Michigan

3. Michigan

They may have some really great lakes, but Michigan’s patriotism is anything but! They rank at number 47 in the nation when it comes to patriotism, with a total score of 26.81.

Their civic engagement isn’t the greatest (they rank at number 37 in the nation), but their military engagement is even worse than that—coming in at number 45.

2. Connecticut

2. Connecticut

Connecticut found itself placed in the bottom three when it comes to patriotism. However, their individual numbers are not as terrible as some others.

The state’s lowest score comes for military engagement, which places them at number 46 in the nation. However, their civic engagement is a bit higher, coming in at number 37. You could do worse than Connecticut…but not by much!

1. New York

1. New York

They may have the Statue of Liberty, but New York is considered the least patriotic state in the country. It seems a bit odd considering that the region has been important to American history since the country’s founding.

They came in at number 45 for civic engagement, but military engagement was really what hurt them. They ranked number 49 for that, giving them a total score of 21.64.
