Maintaining a Budget While in Miami

When you think of Miami you probably think of the beach, warm weather, beautiful people and an incredible nightlife. However, with all of that put together, you probably don't think of 'budget.' The common misconception is that when visiting Miami you are going to end up dropping a small fortune during your time. While this is possible, there are other options available to you. In fact, you have alternatives in order to make sure you are always able to visit Miami on a budget, all while still enjoying yourself and having money to spare when returning home.

Hotel

Your hotel is going to be the major expense. Hotels are going to charge a premium for being right on the beach. While there are dozens of different beach options, these are going to charge you hundreds of dollars more per night. Instead, simply opt for a hotel that is a block or two inland and you'll save a good amount of money. Also, make sure to book your hotel where you plan on spending the majority of your time. If you want the beach, make sure to book on and around South Beach. If you book a downtown hotel, you'll end up spending $50 each way just to get to your location, which is is a quick way to blow your budget.

Car Rental

If you do have to drive around, rent a car. Cabs are rather expensive in Miami and there is nothing more frustrating than watching your meter tick up when you are sitting still in traffic. Instead, for the price of a round trip in a cab to and from the beach, you can have your rental for a week.

Food

Food is another area where you are going to end up potentially spending a considerable amount of money. However, you can save a good amount too. For starters, don't stop at one of the fancy restaurants right on the beach. First, the food is going to be overpriced, and second, the quality probably isn't going to be that good. Again, you are paying for location, not quality of food. After all, with your food, quality is far better than location. Instead, look for a small, local joint. These locations are going to give you authentic cuisine and for a fraction of the price. Try to avoid chains as well, as these locations are going to charge you a pretty penny.

Flights

Flights to Miami range greatly throughout the course of the year. If you really just want to go and don't have a set time of year, try to go towards late spring or early fall. This is when the flights are going to be inexpensive and the weather should still be rather dry. The price of a flight to Miami can easily quadruple between two different points in the year. However, if you can't change the time of year you leave, at least try to fly out midweek. Tuesday through Thursday are usually the best times of the week to fly.
