5 Tips for Perfect Cruise Packing

Cruising is a great way to visit a number of interesting destinations while using the cruise ship as a home base that has everything that you need. You can choose from many different types of cruises that offer a number of different amenities for your trip. Packing for your cruise vacation is simple if you keep these tips in mind:

  1. Know the Level of Formality

Know your cruise line to determine the right type of clothing to bring. If a Captain's Dinner is traditional, you will need to bring eveningwear of some kind, along with dress shoes and a cardigan to keep you comfortable in air-conditioned areas. Some cruises cater to the casual consumer, and you may not need anything more than standard resort wear for activities on board. For women, a long skirt can provide a number of uses for many occasions. For men, a good pair of slacks and sports jacket is generally sufficient for most uses. Many cruise lines may even provide bathrobes for guests, and so you may omit these from your packing list.

  2. Weather

If you are going to a tropical climate like the Caribbean, pack more warm weather clothing, but remember that evening temperatures can drop significantly. Rainy seasons can also lower the temperature so bring a variety of pieces that you can layer as necessary. These may include a shirt, cardigan sweater, fleece top, or pair of long pants. Many people forget to bring socks, which can make a big difference in comfort levels when temperatures fall. For cold climate cruises, such as in Alaska, you will need plenty of warmer clothing to layer in chilly areas, but don’t forget to pack a bathing suit and cover-up for onboard use.

  3. Your Activity Level

Many cruise lines offer a variety of activities on the ship, such as rock-climbing, shuffleboard, ice-skating rinks, and other ways to enjoy your time. Your research will help you to pack proper clothing and footwear for these activities. Also bring a hat and sunglasses to ensure that you remain comfortable when out in the sun.

  4. Mixing and Matching

Many experienced cruisers find it convenient to use the mix-and-match theory of packing. You can choose a color scheme that goes together well and pack a variety of different articles that will go together, whatever the circumstances may be. This method can be a convenient way to keep packing to a minimum while providing as many combinations as possible.

  5. Bring Necessary Toiletries

Experienced cruisers know that you shouldn’t depend on the complementary products the ship provides for your needs. Hair spray, deodorant, creams, lotions, mosquito repellent, and sunscreen are necessary items that are generally not provided. Any other products you usually use for comfort or health should be in your carry-on bag in case your luggage gets lost along the way.
