Where to Stay in Honolulu

Located on the island of Oahu, the Hawaiian capital of Honolulu is a popular destination for all types of travelers. Whether you are on your honeymoon, celebrating a romantic anniversary, visiting with the entire family or just getting away alone for some relaxation, keep these tips in mind in order to find the perfect hotel for your needs and your budget.

Waikiki Hotels

If you are coming to Honolulu for a beach getaway, there is a good chance that you will end up staying in the region known as Waikiki. Home to dozens of accommodation choices, Waikiki is suitable for those who want to be within walking distance of the beach, local attractions, restaurants and nightlife. However, be prepared to pay a premium for being to close to the refreshing water of the Pacific Ocean. While it is possible to find budget rooms for $100 per night, it is a challenge, and those rooms may be further away from the shoreline. Otherwise, be prepared to pay $200 per night for a mid-range hotel or up to $500 per night in an upscale, five-star hotel.

Downtown Hotels

While the downtown area of Honolulu is the political and commercial hub of the state, there are only a handful of hotels within the district. These hotels are often preferred by travelers on business or those who want to be as close as possible to downtown restaurants and the area's biggest shopping malls. Downtown hotel rooms tend to be upwards of $200 per room, are contemporary in design and have plenty of amenities, but they may be further from the beach than some visitors prefer.

Western Honolulu Hotels

As this part of Honolulu encompasses both Pearl Harbor and the airport, it is a common place for travelers to stay for a night or two. While most prefer to stay closer to Waikiki, hotels in this location tend to be cheaper. Here, you will find more affordable accommodation with fewer amenities, and it is possible to find rooms for under $120 per night.

Manoa-Makiki Hotels

Those travelers who are on a serious budget, or who simply want to get away from the tourist crowds, may be interested in a hotel in the district known as Manoa-Makiki. This district is primarily residential, but it is also home to the University of Hawai'i at Manoa campus. The area is home to arguably the cheapest accommodation on the island, and there are hostels as affordable as $25 per night and hotel rooms as low as $60 per night. However, it is important to keep in mind that getting to area attractions will take time and expense either with a rental car or public transport.

Although the overwhelming majority of travelers stay at hotels in Waikiki, that is not the only option. Luxury accommodation for business travelers can be found Downtown, affordable rooms in Manoa are available and convenient hotels close to the airport are all great choices depending on your budget and your preferences while in Honolulu.
