Tour the Safari in San Diego

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is a large tourist attraction in the greater San Diego area near Escondido. In addition to attracting a large number of tourists, the park also plays a major role in conservation, education, breeding, and reintroduction of endangered animals. Originally opened as a breeding area and extension of the San Diego Zoo, today the Safari Park works to preserve a multitude of animal species. The free range enclosures simulate natural environments, with plenty of room for the animals to live comfortably. Housing over 300 species, the park is an exciting and unique chance to get to know the wild side of animals.

Popular Features

One of the best and top must-see features of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is the African tram, which carries guests through a large majority of the park to view African animals in a semi-arid environment. During the ride, guests will learn about various animals, as well as have the opportunity to catch rare sightings on some of the world's most endangered species. There are also several opportunities to walk around and explore on your own with many walk-through exhibits focusing on birds, bats, and lemurs, among others.

In addition to the tram, regular admission includes all shows within the park. Some notable ones include the Cheetah Run, where the cheetah chases its favorite toy along a 330 foot track. The cheetah is able to reach speeds up to 70 miles in four seconds on this track. The Frequent Flyers Bird Show demonstrates some awe-inspiring birds, some of which fly right over the audience. There are also Animal Encounters and Keeper Talks at exhibits throughout the park.

The park is set among dusty hills, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water. Cool, breathable clothing is a must. Also, be sure to bring your camera as there are plenty of unique photo opportunities that you won't want to miss. The best time to go is usually early in the morning or late afternoon, as that is when the animals tend to be most active. These are also cooler parts of the day, so the animals are able to come out of the shade and move around comfortably.

Tickets

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park offers several different ticket types. General admission is currently $46 for adults. Also available are safari packages, such as the cheetah, behind-the-scenes, and the caravan safaris. Each one costs a fee in addition to admission and allows unique experiences such as meeting animals up close and personal and admittance into additional areas.

Regular admission is discounted by 10% for seniors, AAA members, and airline and cruise employees. For the entire month of October, kids receive free admission with a paying adult. Note that the free child ticket does not include the tram. This can be purchased separately at the park. Active military members receive a complimentary one day pass with the presentation of valid identification.
