Top 5 Napa Wineries for a Picnic

Most, if not all, of Napa Valley’s wineries boast spectacular views of the valleys, vineyards, and rolling green hills of California’s wine country. Some of these wineries offer better views than others, however, and to dine amongst these views is considered a priceless experience. But in Napa Valley, everyone can take part in what nature has to offer and you don’t always have to spend a lot of money or pay membership fees. Here is a list of five Napa Valley wineries that make for great picnic areas.

  1. Clos du Val

With its initial claim to fame dating back to its selection for the 1976 Paris blind tastings, Clos du Val was one out of six vineyards chosen from California to represent itself for it’s Cabernet. Today, this vineyard offers a warm and open environment that isn’t stuffy like some other wineries can tend to feel. Try to visit on weekdays because Clos du Val’s famous picnic tables and cabanas fill up quickly. The large, roomy cabanas overlooking Stags Leap Vineyard can be used for an intimate get together or a party of up to 8 guests. The picnic tables are nestled amongst olive groves or simply dotted across the front lawn. No matter where you are, you’re insured a beautiful view.

  2. Robert Sinskey

This husband and wife duo has a lot of personality, which can be seen on their fun and informative website and through the photos available there as well. The food aspect of this vineyard is played up due to the fact that the vintner’s wife is actually the house chef. Take the Farm to Table tour during the middle of the week when it’s not as busy for a more personal experience at the winery. Make sure to buy a bottle of wine as well and head out to the picnic area because no reservations are necessary. The Robert Sinskey winery also has an event called First Weekends each month in which they release a new wine and offer tastings.

  3. Regusci Winery

Regusci winery is said to have the atmosphere of walking into Tuscany and feeling like you’re bronzing under the Italian sun. This is due in part to the naturally perfect California weather, but also to the winery being housed in one of the oldest buildings in Napa Valley. Regusci’s picnic tables are nestled under large, shady trees and nothing seems too flashy or luxurious in this vineyard. Make sure to call ahead though- this family-oriented winery with expansive and photographic vineyard panoramas fills up quickly.

  4. Clos Pegase

Eclectic would be the word to describe the Clos Pegase vineyard. Architect Michael Graves created a postmodern mix of Classical architecture that now makes up the grounds of this Mediterranean-inspired winery. No matter the style of artwork and architecture, this vineyard has spectacular views of the valley. Oakville Grocery Gourmet is nearby as well so you can stop by, grab a sandwich, and enjoy the views at this picnic-friendly establishment. Reservations are not necessary for parties under eight guests.

  5. Rutherford Hill

With a name referring to their picnic tables as “Picnic Groves,” Rutherford Hill’s picnic areas are clearly a cut above the rest. Giant, aged Oak trees provide shade from the warm California sun while you take in a meal with your friends, family, and/or significant other. Rutherford Hill also offers six separate packages priced from $100 to $150 that include tastings of three distinct wines at a white-clothed table overlooking the valley. No reservations are required, but as with other beautiful scenic sites, make sure to visit during slower hours during the weekdays to avoid waits or fully booked days.
