The Best Hotels in Mexico City's Centro Histórico

Mexico City is huge, with a long history, a rich culture, and a ton of stuff to do. Of course, you'll need a base of operations as you explore what Mexico's capital (locally known as the "DF," distrito federal) has to offer. What better place than the historic center of the city? Many of the hotels—like everything elseare in old, interesting, and usually repurposed buildings. If you don't find something you like here, keep looking. Centro Histórico is a fascinating place.

Best Luxury Hotel: Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico

Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico sits on the border of Zócalo Square, a monument to Old World luxury. From the Art Nouveau decor to the open elevators and stained-glass lobby ceiling, the hotel was the first in the city to be awarded the Ministry of Tourism's "Tesoros de Mexico" distinction. In addition to rooms, the hotel also puts together tour packages ranging from the romantic to the pre-Hispanic historical. Accommodations range from small economy rooms to master suites with views of the city, but whichever room you choose, your comfort is guaranteed.

Best Boutique Hotel: Zócalo Central Hotel

Zócalo Central Hotel is alsoas the name suggestson the main Zócalo Square, on the opposite side from Gran Hotel. Zócalo Central accommodations include whirlpool bathtubs in the junior suites. The hotel provides complimentary bottled water and apples, and the 6th-floor balcony restaurant is well-loved by guests. Wi-Fi and parking are free, and a babysitting service can be provided for a fee. From the wood floors to the decorated ceiling, Zócalo Central Hotel is all about taking care of you.

Best Budget Hotel: Hotel Isabel

Hotel Isabel rooms range from $13-$20 a night, making the place something of a go-to for budget-conscious travelers. At the price, you're definitely getting what you pay for. The amenities are not the poshest by any stretch of the imagination. Reviewers regularly describe somewhat threadbare blankets and spotty Wi-Fi. Yet, the balconies are nice, and the atmosphere is somewhere in between a hostel and a hotel, but with the benefit of having a room to yourself. All in all, the location near Zócalo Square is great, and you can't beat the price unless you just sleep in the street.

Best Famly-Friendly Hotel: Motel NH Centro Historico

Part of the NH Hotel Group, Motel NH Centro Historico is near the square and close to Metropolitan Cathedral, City Museum, and other prominent attractions. The hotel's styling is distinctly modern, and the rooms are decorated in soothing neutrals and warm tones. The 5th-floor restaurant has a dining area on a terrace, and "Lazy Sundays" mean breakfast until noon with a complimentary late checkout every Sunday. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, and it's worth noting that the place is smoke-free, which isn't the case for every hotel in the city. Motel NH prices are more modest than Gran Hotel or Zócalo Central, but it's still within the expected range for hotels in the city.
