New York City
This AI-generated photo of New York City doesn't seem all that unusual when you first glance at it. It's definitely done in a Van Gogh "Starry Night" style, and it's kind of amazing that this program was able to replicate the artist's techniques so realistically. However, look harder, and things start to get a little weird.
Some of these skyscrapers in the skyline definitely look like they're not up to code. We've got what looks like the top half of the Empire State Building stacked on top of two other skyscrapers. And then you've got the skyscraper to the right of it that looks a little bit too svelte to be structurally sound!
Columbus
The Midwest has never looked as terrifying as it does in this AI-generated photo of Columbus! We get the classic swirling lights in the sky that Van Gogh is associated with, but it's done in a much weirder, more apocalyptic-looking way. Is this a shot of Columbus or the end of the world?
The sky background doesn't look so much like a starry night as it looks like the planet Jupiter looming over earth, ready to crash into us. And what's going on with the ground? We're not sure if that's supposed to be earth or water, but whichever one it is, it's a very creepy blood red.
San Antonio
Once again, this AI image generator has done a great job of creating a beautiful picture that's reminiscent of Van Gogh's classic art style. But overall, we'd say this was definitely a weird choice for depicting San Antonio. It's much too bleak to actually be in sunny, hot Texas!
You'd be forgiven for thinking this was Seattle because of how rainy the entire picture looks, and it was definitely a weird choice for a city that sees less rainfall each year than the national average. Maybe the San Antonio Riverwalk has flooded and has now taken over the entire city?
Detroit
Poor Detroit just can't ever seem to catch a break. Even when it comes to machine-generated images, it can't escape its reputation as a run-down, dying city. And that's exactly what we got with this bleak (but still somehow beautiful) AI image. It might not be the most realistic, but it still gets the message across.
Obviously, a run-down dirt road doesn't lead you into the heart of the city, but it actually fits with the mood of this picture perfectly. However, the dilapidated feeling of the city in the background might be a bit of overkill—especially the skyscraper to the right that looks like it's had a chunk taken out of it!
Denver
This AI-generated image of Denver has to be one of the most beautiful of the entire bunch. It almost looks like Van Gogh could have actually painted this on himself, assuming you don't know much about when and where he lived! Regardless, this one is a stunning home run.
It was definitely a good move to depict the city as snowy; although we're not exactly sure what's going on with all those deep ruts carved into the snow—it wouldn't be an AI photo without a little weirdness, right? However, the cool blues of the bottom half contrast beautifully with the warm yellows used in the buildings on the top half of the image.
Chicago
The image-generating program went pretty minimal with its depiction of the city of Chicago, but it definitely captures the spirit of both the city and of Van Gogh himself. Obviously, this AI loves the sky swirls that Van Gogh used in The Starry Night. However, the sky isn't what caught our attention most in this.
Considering that Chicago rests on the shores of Lake Michigan, it makes sense that this image would include plenty of water in it. However, if you look closely at the bottom of the photo, the water is looking mighty choppy. We're not sure what kind of storm is brewing on the lake, but Chicago might want to take cover!
Miami
Did Vincent Van Gogh ever take a summer vacation to Miami? There's no information indicating that he ever did, but you could have fooled us after we saw at this image! It looks exactly like the painting we imagine Van Gogh would create after a little fun in the sun.
The combination of blues, yellows, and oranges that this image uses perfectly encapsulates the spirit of tropical Miami, but what we like the most about this picture is hiding out in the bottom left corner. It looks like the AI created some sort of billboard for this scene—we had no idea that these programs could get as meta as having an image within an image!
Houston
When you first look at this image, it looks pretty basic and unremarkable. Did Houston get the short end of the stick when it comes to AI-generated images? That might be the case, but when you look closer at this picture, you start to notice some pretty interesting (and terrifying) things.
The most confusing elements of this image are definitely in the sky. Does it look like there are two moons hanging over Houston to anyone else? Plus, the larger "moon" is not a perfect circle, and, in fact, looks almost like it could be a skull with three eye sockets. We hope that this isn't the AI program predicting an alien invasion!
Los Angeles
What in the world is going on in Los Angeles? According to this AI-generated image, quite a bit! While the top half of the image looks very much like classic Van Gogh, things get more and more abstract and weird as your eye moves from the sky down into the city.
What's going on with all these ominous black towers that are jumbled together in downtown LA? And why does it look like there's another city floating in the clouds above? If you really start to notice the details of this image, it gets creepy very quickly! It's definitely more horror story than Van Gogh.
Kansas City
Once again, we have another AI-generated image that's a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand, the program has faithfully reproduced Van Gogh's signature style with some impressive precision. But at the same time, the content itself in the image is pretty hilariously jumbled and makes no sense.
We understand that, whether you're talking about the Missouri or Kansas version, Kansas City is smack dab in the midwestern United States. However, it's pretty ridiculous that in this image, wheat fields are rolling right up to the edge of downtown. We're pretty sure that no city limits in the country are that dramatic!
Dallas
Honestly, this AI-generated image of Dallas is probably one of the weaker ones created in the bunch. While it does have one big identifying feature that makes it uniquely Dallas, the rest of the image is pretty generic and could apply to lots of big cities in the United States.
While the program didn't quite nail the shape perfectly, it's obvious that the giant skyscraper in the image is supposed to be the Bank of America Plaza, which is the tallest building in the city. We're assuming that the yellow on the building is supposed to represent the reflection of the sun, but where exactly is the sun in this image?
San Diego
There's no denying that these image-generating programs are great at nailing the big-picture gist of whatever prompt you give them. However, when it comes to some specific detail, things get a little hazier and a lot more hilarious. And this image of San Diego is proof of that!
While this image is better than anything we could actually paint ourselves, it does raise one major question that left us scratching our heads—why does it look like San Diego is located on the banks of a river and not the Pacific Ocean? It seems like this AI might need a geography lesson or two!
Phoenix
When it comes to cultivating a desert vibe, AI did a great job. Even if you're not super familiar with the city, this image just radiates the desert vibe that Phoenix is known for. And we especially like that the program managed to create something in the style of Van Gogh without those omnipresent Starry Night swirls.
However, we have some serious questions about what's going on in this image. We can clearly see that this is a nighttime scene by the dark sky with all the stars in the background. But then...why do all the buildings look like they're illuminated by the sun? Clearly, the program couldn't decide what time of day it wanted!
Washington D.C.
It's a rainy day in our capital city in this AI-generated image! We're not sure why the program went with such a bleak, dreary image, but it perfectly encapsulates the negative feelings most of us have about our seat of national politics. But, once again, the specifics in this image are a little weird.
We're not sure if the Capitol Building has been damaged or gotten a weird makeover, but its shape is definitely a bit off from the round dome we're normally used to. And what's with all the splotches of red? We thought they were stoplights at first, but that doesn't explain why some of them are floating in the air or on the building itself.
Philadelphia
AI programs have generated worse images than this one, but it's barely recognizable as Philadelphia, save for one major landmark. It could almsot be any city. However, it does have a very Van Gogh feel thanks to all the swirly sky stuff—although he is known for other things besides that too!
You can tell this is supposed to be Philadelphia thanks to the giant spire that's supposed to represent the City Hall building in the city. However, in true AI image fashion, the proportions are all wrong. Still, we get the gist of it, and that's what these programs are best at conveying.
