Cultures are different—we all know this. That’s precisely why the word “culture shock” exists. This is when a person visits another country to find that the way they feel about certain things isn’t universal. For example, some countries sleep in the middle of the day. In America, it’s hard to imagine someone leaving work to take a nap at 2 PM, but it happens elsewhere. Granted, we think this is something that Americans should start doing ASAP.
America has a pretty defined culture, whether people want to admit it or not. That’s why we experience culture shock whenever we go to Russia, China, Italy, or another country. Some of the stuff we see just makes us stop, stare, and ask, “What the heck!?”
If you’ve ever experienced this, you’re not alone. Every day, an American abroad finds out something they thought was “normal” isn’t so normal after all. For example, did you know that Romania puts colorful, cartoon characters on their gravestones? Here, that would be seen as disrespectful, but over there? Nah. It’s totally normal. Worse yet, the cartoons show how the person died! Yikes.
These are 40 things travelers on Reddit experienced overseas that made them stop, stare, and question what in the world they were looking at. Gotta say—there’s some pretty weird stuff in here.
