More and more travel destinations are beginning to ban selfie sticks.

What the Selfie Stick Backlash Means for Your Next Vacation

On a list of banned items released by the Vatican Secret Service this week, selfie sticks made their way among the contraband restricted by the Pope’s visit to the United States. This begs the question, what is the reason for this growing trend of keeping the device out of certain attractions?

What are selfie sticks?

A selfie stick is a device that allows you to attach a phone or camera to its extendable arm and take a photograph of yourself, taking in more of your surroundings than would be available simply by using the length of a human arm.

Why are they being banned?

Many bans cite evidence of their disruptions to others, particularly at spectator situations such as concerts or sporting events. One of the major players in the opposition to selfie sticks, Disney, banned the gadgets, saying that the “extension poles have become a growing safety concern.” Six Flags soon followed, issuing a statement that “guests who bring selfie sticks to the park will be asked to store them in their cars during their visit.

Besides being a serious safety issue on rides, other reasons for bans are to put the focus back on the task at hand. Many international monuments have followed suit in asking for visitors to not use any additional equipment when capturing photos. At least two dozen people around the world have been killed or injured due to misconduct with selfie sticks, including a recent participant at this year's Running of the Bulls.

Where are they banned?

  • Many museums (including the Getty, the Smithsonian, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art) no longer allow selfie sticks on their campuses.
  • South Korea now restricts the sale and distribution of the device throughout the country.
  • Amusement parks, like Disney and Six Flags, have issued a complete ban on selfie sticks.
  • The first state to pass a law regarding the gadget was New York, who now bans their use when in the presence of dangerous animals, such as in zoos.
  • While it may be as tempting as it is life threatening, you can no longer use selfie sticks at the Running of the Bulls.
  • You might find yourself in a position to take a selfie with the gorgeous ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, but you will have to do so without a selfie stick.
  • What religious experience is complete without a selfie stick?  As of now, a pilgrimage to Mecca, which has seen the technological invasion as disrespectful.

How can you use a selfie stick without being obnoxious?

  • Take your selfie in a less crowded area, such as in a nature setting.
  • Don’t do anything dangerous—use common sense.
  • Try not to draw unnecessary attention to yourself.
  • Have someone else take a picture of your group. Problem solved!
