Navigating Airport Security

Whether you've been through the airport a hundred times or you are heading out for your first voyage on a plane in some time, it is important to know all of the ins and outs of airport security. You've seen all the news reports of individuals complaining about problems with airport security and being delayed for hours, which is why you need to take this chance to check up on the latest airport security rules and what you can do to move through checkpoints that much easier.

Arrive Early

For starters, you want to arrive early. Don't show up an hour before the flight and expect to make it without any problems. Even if you are arriving at the country's smallest airport you want to make sure to arrive within plenty of time, generally at least two hours before your flight begins. Allow for even more time if you are traveling during the holiday season or internationally because of the greater number of travelers and increased screening procedures. By allotting yourself the extra time, you will make your flight without a hitch.

Clothing

Dressing appropriately for airport security is going to make moving through it much easier. There are two items you need to focus on: shoes and belt. You will want shoes that slip on and off easily. While sandals are not all that desirable as they might fall off when you are in a rush, you don't want anything that is going to lace up half way to your knee. Instead, just a simple slip-on shoe is perfect and easy to remove. Also, remember that you need to take belts off when going through security. Removing it before it is your turn to go through the metal detector will speed the process along.

Electronics

If you are like most people, then you travel with a computer. That laptop is your connection to the rest of the world so you bring it as a carry-on. However, you need to remember that it needs its own container when sliding through the security scanner. Don't worry; this is not going to damage the equipment, but you don't want to be that person who leaves it in the case only to be sent back and take it out. While you are making your way up to the front, slip the computer out (you can leave the cords in your bag), and have it ready. Remember that every computer needs its own container. Do not place it in the bin with belts or other metal objects.

Liquids

The last thing to really remember are your liquids. You want all of your carry-on liquids packed into a clear, one quart bag. Each liquid must also measure less than three ounces; otherwise TSA officials will prevent you from continuing through security with them. Leave your industrial-sized Chanel no. 5 at home.
