America has some unusual and interesting history, if you know where to look. We’re all familiar with the major historical hotspots like Mount Rushmore and the Grand Canyon, but there is plenty of smaller, and just as fascinating, history to be found from coast to coast.

Today, we’re taking a look at the most unusual towns in every state. These places hold stories, traditions, and monuments that are sometimes a little off the beaten path--not many of these places are at the top of vacation bucket lists. But that doesn’t mean they’re not worth a visit! They all contribute, in their own small way, to the long, sometimes bizarre story of the United States.

Scottsboro, Alabama, might seem like an unlikely destination for a day trip. But it's become renowned as the land of lost luggage, both within the US and abroad. The Unclaimed Baggage Center is one of the only stores in the world that sells lost suitcases and their contents from airports around the country—to anyone brave enough to take their chances!

While there’s no reimbursement for broken or stolen items, if you’re lucky enough, you could return home with some once-in-a-lifetime finds at Rock Bottom prices. So if you're ever feeling lucky, head to Scottsboro and explore what was once someone else' burdensome baggage!

Did you know...

  • Minnesota might say that it's the "Land of 10,000 Lakes," but Canada has it beat. The country as a whole has over three million lakes. That means Canada has 60% of the world's total number of lakes within its borders. It must seem like paradise for people who like to fish or boat!
  • Taking a vacation is good for your health! Studies have shown that a vacation can help to lower your risk of heart disease. It's also a proven way to improve your creativity. So if you have some writer's block or need to lower your stress, grab a friend and go on an adventure!
  • You've heard of the phrase "wanderlust," but do you know the German word "fernweh"? It means "far sickness" or an intensely strong urge to travel. The next time you feel the need to head out on a road trip, you've got a case of fernweh. And the only cure is to travel somewhere new!
  • The largest pool in the world can be found at the San Alfonso del Mar resort in Chile. It has 66 million gallons (enough water to fill 100 Olympic-sized pools). It's 3,323 feet in length, over twice the length of the next biggest pool. At a cost of $3,000,000, that sounds like a pretty good deal.
  • The surface area of Pluto is just under 6.5 million square miles. The CIA Factbook lists the area of Russia to be just over 6.6 million square miles. That makes Russia bigger than Pluto (and much closer to visit). Are you still very upset that Pluto isn’t a planet anymore?
